Når jeg savner min far by Alberte Winding was published in October 2016. When I found out Winding was coming out with a new book for teens I jeg knew I had to read it! About a month ago Gyldendal was so wonderful to send me a copy of it for reviewing and I excitedly started reading the book of one of my childhood’s favorite authors.

Thirteen year old Babel’s world was turned upside down when she lost her dad and her family is now consumed by grief starting to fall apart. Everything changes yet again when Balder moves in the house opposite hers and they together discovers a light fro a room on the first floor that might allow them to see their deceased parents again. At the same time Bebel experiences something far more normal: Her first real crush.

Når jeg savner min far is a sweet book. Though being a teen book I found it pretty hard and confusing to read and understand. It was pretty jumpy and sometimes while reading I caught myself thinking Did I accidentally skip a chapter? Because I am completely lost.. Despite the confusion Bebel is a sweet girl I myself easily could relate to.

The book is in a way divided in two parts. One part is Babel’s regular life in school and her crust on Balder. The other part is her grief and obsession with seeing her dad again and finding out what happened to him. The one part is fine and easy to relate to, but the other is messy and hard to make a tail of. In a way, it actually fits pretty well with what Bebel is going though with grief and confusion, but I just think it would be hard for a 10-14 year old, who is reading the book, to see it like that.

I had pretty high expectations to this book. Probably too big, because it did not live up to then. Når jeg savner min far was on the other hand many other things I had not expected. It was kind of spacey and metaforical and generally had a pretty atypical and original plot.

I mean it both in a good and a confusing way when I say that I have never read anything alike. Mostly in the good way 😉 Therefore I give Når jeg savner min far ★★★☆☆.

It was a fine and sweet book that at the same time deals with some of life’s biggest moments and turning points. I will recommend this book to teens who are ready for a pretty different but great book ❤
