Men alligevel fire stjerner.

I was very surprised when I got a message from my sweet mom saying there was a large package from the Danish publishing house Gyldendal waiting for me at home. Apparently I was lucky enough to not only get a copy of Patric Ness’s new book Release for review, but also got a clock with the bookcover design upon it and a mug with the fantastic quote “In some universes, we‘re *all* Beyonce”. I immediately knew that this would be a great book. I was right.

Seventeen year old Adam Thron has quite the day lying before him. First he must go get flowers for his mother, go for a run, go to work at the Evil International Mega-Conglomerate , help his preach father in the church, meet with Angela about the pizzas for tonight and then.. to the “get-together” that is actually Enzo’s farewell-party . But the day just keep getting crazier and crazier when new truths are revealed, and things happen that will change his destiny for good. At the same time a lost soul arises from the lake with a goal. But she must hurry, for if she does not find peace before sundown, it will be the end of the world.

There are two main plots in Release. The first one is Adam’s story and struggle with being gay in a very Christian family and all of his other challenges as a teenager. The other is the recently murdered Kathrine van Leuwen’s soul that is lost and confused and needs to find peace. they are two very different plots to switch between and follow, but Ness somehow makes it work. Personally I felt far more attached to Adam and could have done without the bizarre and supernatural spirits, faun and almighty spiritual queen, but it definitely added an interesting twist on a otherwise contemporary YA-novel

I think Patrick Ness portraits Adam’s homosexuality in a very fine and realistic way. It is not muffled or hidden away in any way. It is just who he is. Which I think only few authors achieves with homosexual characters in their books.

The book did not wake a whole lot a feelings in my, but boy did it make me laugh! There are just SO many great quotes in this book, and I love the brilliant characters Ness has created for this book. Especially Angela (Adam’s best friend). She is definitely my favorite!

I give Release ★★★★☆. It is not four huge shining stars, but still, it is fur stars. I think it was a really good book that portrayed life as a teenager in a awesome way, but it is not a book that made my heart beat fast with excitement nor made it break with sadness. It did not blow me away, but it was definitely a fresh breeze of something.

I will definitely recommend reading Release. It is a really nice book with some awesome characters and a VERY original plot. I think many teenagers will be able to nod their heads in recognition to Adam’s feelings and worries, or at least feel him on his crazy busy and confusing day.

May you all have a fantastic summer (with better weather than I have in Denmark right now haha).
